The Hill 70 Tartan

This Tartan has been designed for the Hill 70 Memorial Project by Ronald A. Roach who works for the Directorate of History and Heritage of the Department of National Defence. It is preserved for posterity in the Scottish Tartan Authorities Woven Archive.  

Symbology of the Hill 70 Tartan:  

Grey: The skies and battlefields of war torn Europe   
French Grey: 3rd Cdn Division / The grey skies  
Red & White: The official colours of Canada / Infantry Corps   
Green: 4th Cdn Div / The field of combat White: Birstht of a nation / The chalk ground  
Black and White stripes: The four brigades in each division and four battalions in each brigade.  
Green: 4th Cdn Div / The field of combat   
Red Band/White stripe: Canadian Flag Four diagonal checks extending from the crossing of white stripes represent the four divisions.  
White: Birth of a nation / The chalk ground

Black: Mourning for the lost / The coal fields of Lens-Loos-en-Gohelle   

Red & Blue: Innovative use of Artillery and Engineers Six Crimson stripes: The award of six Victoria Cross

Red Band/White stripe: The Canadian Flag   

Four diagonal checks extending from the crossing of white stripes: represent the four divisions.
